How many hours do I need to become a jump pilot?
Most US dropzones require FAA CPL with instrument rating and 500–1,500 total flight hours depending on aircraft type. Twin Otter captains typically need a DHC-6 type rating and 1,500+ hours. In Europe, EASA CPL is required. Prior DZ experience is valued but rarely required.
What aircraft do jump pilots fly?
The most common jump planes are the De Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter (most popular worldwide, carries 22 jumpers), the Cessna 208B Grand Caravan (single-engine, carries 14–18), the Cessna 182 (small DZs, 3–4 jumpers), and the CASA 212 (large turboprop, 24 jumpers). Some large US DZs operate Pilatus PC-6 Turbo Porters.
Is prior skydiving experience required to be a jump pilot?
No - most dropzones hire pilots on their aviation credentials alone. However, understanding the skydiving operation (exit procedures, spotting, emergency procedures) is essential and learned on the job. Many jump pilots go on to do a tandem jump out of curiosity!
