How do I become a tandem instructor?
In the US: USPA A-licence, 500 jumps minimum, USPA Coach rating, then complete a USPA Tandem Instructor Course (UPT Sigma or Strong). In the UK: British Skydiving B-licence minimum, then a BS Instructor Course. In Australia: APF E-licence and 500 jumps. The process typically takes 2–5 years from your first jump.
How much do tandem instructors earn?
In the US, most tandem instructors are paid per jump: $30–$60 per tandem. Busy instructors doing 10–20 tandems per day at large DZs can earn $60,000–$100,000+ per year. UK salaried roles pay £28,000–£45,000. Australian salaried roles (Experience Co) pay AUD $70,000–$100,000.
What is the difference between a tandem instructor and an AFF instructor?
A tandem instructor flies a harnessed student as a passenger - no solo canopy skills required of the student. An AFF instructor teaches student skydivers to jump solo through the 8-level AFF programme, conducting in-freefall coaching before the student deploys their own parachute. Both ratings are required for most full-time instructor roles.
