Used Skydiving Accessories

Helmets, altimeters, jumpsuits, audibles, goggles, weight belts and camera gear — what to look for when buying used.

Skydiving helmets

Skydiving helmets divide into two main types: open face (bowl-style, protecting the top and sides of the head while leaving the face exposed) and full face (enclosing the entire head for higher protection and aerodynamic efficiency). Open-face helmets are lighter and preferred by many fun jumpers and formation skydivers. Full-face helmets are standard for freefly, speed and camera work.

Popular manufacturers include Cookie (G4, G35), Tonfly (TFX, 3X), Bonehead (Aero, Mindwarp), and Parasport. When buying a used skydiving helmet, inspect the shell for cracks, delamination, or impact damage. A helmet that has absorbed a significant impact — even if it looks intact externally — may have compromised structural integrity and should be retired.

Camera helmets (Cookie Fuel, Tonfly TFX camera mount, etc.) carry an additional safety consideration: the camera mount must be snag-free and must not create an audible malfunction risk. Most DZs and governing bodies impose minimum jump counts (typically 200+ jumps) before attaching cameras.

Altimeters and audibles

Visual altimeters are available analogue (dial) or digital. Analogue altimeters (Alti-2 Atlas, L&B Altimaster) are robust, immediate, and require no batteries. Digital altimeters (Alti-2 N3, L&B Ares II, Viso II) offer logbook functionality and greater precision. When buying a used altimeter, verify the calibration accuracy by comparing it against a known-good device at a consistent altitude.

Audible altimeters (L&B Optima II, Vigil Ares, Parasport Italia Pro-Dytter) fit inside the helmet and produce audio warnings at pre-set altitudes. They supplement rather than replace visual altimeters. When buying used audibles, ensure the battery terminals are clean, the speaker is undamaged, and that the device still allows altitude setting in your target language and units.

Jumpsuits, goggles, weight belts and accessories

Skydiving jumpsuits are discipline-specific. Belly-flying suits have grippers on the arms and legs for formation skydiving. Freefly suits are tighter, more aerodynamic, and lack grippers. Wingsuit base suits are a specialist category. Used jumpsuits from manufacturers like Atair, Tony Suits, and Bev Suits are widely available — check seams, zip condition, and any grip wear.

Goggles are consumables — seals perish and lenses scratch. Buying used goggles is typically only worth it if they are lightly used. Weight belts (for lighter jumpers needing more fall rate) are straightforward — inspect the belt webbing and buckle for wear. Camera rigs (Mindwarp, Cookie Camera, Flat Top) require careful suitability assessment for your specific camera model and helmet.
