What is a complete skydiving rig?

A complete skydiving rig, sometimes called a parachute system, consists of four components: the container (harness-container system), the main canopy, the reserve canopy, and an Automatic Activation Device (AAD). When buying used skydiving rigs, you need to assess all four independently, because each has its own service life, jump history, and airworthiness considerations.

Second hand skydiving rigs range widely in price depending on the manufacturer, age, total jumps on the container, the canopies included, and whether the AAD still has significant life remaining. A well-maintained used rig from a reputable manufacturer with a young AAD can be every bit as safe as a new one, provided it has been properly inspected.

Popular manufacturers of used skydiving rigs

The most commonly traded second hand skydiving rigs come from a handful of well-established manufacturers. UPT Vector (United Parachute Technologies) is the world's largest manufacturer and their rigs hold their value well. Sunpath Javelin is widely used and well-regarded for its clean closing system. Mirage Systems produces premium containers favoured by many experienced jumpers. Aerodyne Icon is popular for its aggressive freefly-friendly design, and Wings (Sunrise Enterprises) is known for value and reliability. Infinity and Curve are smaller manufacturers with strong reputations in the community.

When searching for used skydiving rigs for sale, prioritise containers from manufacturers with strong customer support networks, this matters when you need reserve repacks, AAD compatibility upgrades, or harness alterations as your skills and body change.

What affects the price of a used rig?

Several factors determine the fair price of a 2nd hand skydiving rig:

  • Date of manufacture (DOM)

Containers have no fixed expiry date, but most manufacturers recommend retirement after 20 to 25 years. DOM is stamped inside the container.

  • Total jumps on container

A lightly used container with 200 jumps is worth more than an identical one with 1,200 jumps, all else equal.

  • Lineset jumps on main canopy

Lines wear faster than fabric. A reline is a significant cost, so factor in remaining lineset life.

  • AAD remaining service life

Cypres AADs have a 12.5 or 15.5-year total lifespan. Vigil lasts 20 years. An AAD with 2 years left is nearly worthless; one with 10 years left adds significant value.

  • What is included

Full rig (container + main + reserve + AAD) vs container-only vs partial rigs, ensure the listing is clear.

Red flags to watch for

When browsing skydiving rigs for sale, walk away if you encounter:

  • Seller refuses a rigger inspection before sale
  • No documentation, no logbook, no DOM, no service records
  • AAD expired, in service window, or with less than 2 years remaining
  • Reserve repack overdue (more than 180 days since last repack)
  • Price significantly below market, usually means hidden problems
  • Seller cannot explain the jump history or where the rig has been used

Why use DZSpotter over Facebook groups?

Facebook skydiving gear groups are popular but come with real risks: anonymous sellers, no listing standards, no gear specification requirements, and no community accountability. A skydiving rig for sale on Facebook could have incorrect specs, an expired AAD, or an undisclosed damage history, and there is no mechanism to flag a bad seller.

DZSpotter's marketplace requires sellers to list DOM, jump counts, AAD expiry, and reserve repack date. Every listing is visible to the whole community, and sellers can earn phone confirmation, identity verification or a Trusted Seller badge, each shown for exactly what it checked. That structure and accountability is not something anonymous classifieds can match. For safety-critical equipment like used skydiving rigs, it is not optional.

Common questions about used skydiving rigs

What is included in a complete skydiving rig?

A complete rig includes the harness and container system, a main canopy, a reserve canopy and usually an AAD. Check the listing carefully, because some rigs are sold without the AAD or with a reserve that is due a repack. On DZSpotter, complete rig listings state what is included and must carry a reserve repack date.

How many jumps is too many for a used rig?

There is no single cut off, because condition depends on care, packing and storage as much as jump numbers. A well looked after container with high jumps can outlast a neglected low jump one. Judge the whole system on a rigger inspection rather than the jump count alone.

Can a newly licensed jumper buy a used rig?

Yes, most newly licensed jumpers start on used equipment. The priority is a docile main canopy at a sensible wing loading for your experience, sized with advice from your instructors. Have a rigger confirm the harness fits you and the whole system is airworthy before you buy.
